Cape Town's summer runs October to April and it is genuinely long and dry: the south-easter blowing, hot afternoons, and daylight past eight in the evening in December and January. That is also when the city is full and rates are at their highest. The value sits in the shoulders. September is flower season, when the West Coast and Namaqualand turn over completely for a few weeks. May to August is the wet winter, quiet in the restaurants and the start of the whale season along the Overberg coast.
Cape Town International takes any aircraft, and the city is compact enough that a helicopter is a pleasure rather than a necessity, though the run along the Twelve Apostles is worth taking once.

Beyond the city, the winelands of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are under an hour inland, and the Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach and Cape Point make a full day from any base in town.
