June in Europe: Under the Midnight Sun

Iceland in continuous daylight. Geothermal water, lava-field walking and sea swimming close to midnight.

In June the sun does not properly set in Iceland. Around the solstice you get twenty-one hours of usable light in Reykjavik and effectively none of the dark at all in the north, which changes what a day can hold. Members who arrive expecting a cold country are usually surprised: ten to fourteen degrees, a great deal of wind, and water everywhere that is either freezing or forty degrees with nothing in between.

Nine or ten nights. Two on the Reykjanes peninsula to land and decompress, five on the Troll Peninsula in the north where the light is at its strangest, and the balance on Snaefellsnes or in the eastern fjords. We keep the Golden Circle out of it. It is the one part of the country that now feels crowded, and nothing on it is worth an afternoon of your time.

The days are built around water and lava. Geothermal bathing in the morning, a lava-field or crater walk in the middle of the day, sea swimming off a black beach at eleven at night with the sun still on the horizon. Heli-skiing on the Troll Peninsula runs into the middle of June in a good year, and the salmon rivers open at the end of the month. Puffins are on the cliffs throughout.

Keflavik takes any aircraft and is forty-five minutes from the capital. Reykjavik City handles smaller types closer in, and Akureyri is the field for the north. The live consideration is volcanic: the Reykjanes eruptions of recent years have periodically closed roads and the Blue Lagoon at short notice, so we build the first two nights with an alternative already held rather than improvised.

None of our preferred hotel partners operates in Iceland. We say so rather than dress up a property we do not stand behind. What we use instead is the retreat wing at the Blue Lagoon on the peninsula and a privately held lodge in the Fljot valley in the north, both taken on an exclusive-use basis where the dates allow.

Ask your advisor about a private beat on one of the northern salmon rivers, June heli-skiing while the snow holds, and taking the whole lodge for a family group rather than a set of rooms.
