April in Asia: Blossom and Onsen

April in Japan is the month everyone wants and almost nobody plans properly. The blossom front moves north at its own pace and can arrive a fortnight early or a fortnight late, so we hold flexible dates and confirm the middle of the trip about three weeks out. Kyoto sits between fifteen and twenty degrees, the evenings are cool, and the light in the first hour after dawn is the reason to be there.

Fourteen nights, three bases. Three in Tokyo to land and adjust, five in Kyoto, and six on the Ise-Shima coast, which is where the trip actually becomes restful. The second half is deliberately empty. Kyoto in April is demanding even when it is done well, and the onsen coast is the reason members come back rather than the blossom.

In Kyoto we work early and late. The Philosopher's Path and the Kamo riverbank before seven, temple gardens opened privately before the gates go up, and the rest of the day given to the kitchens. Ise-Shima is the opposite: a private open-air bath before breakfast, the ama divers, the inner shrine at Ise on a quiet morning, and a boat out into Ago Bay. There is no schedule after the third day.

Japan is the most administratively demanding country we fly into and the most rewarding once it is set up. Non-scheduled flights need permits filed well in advance, and business aviation slots and parking at Haneda are genuinely scarce in April. We apply early, hold Narita as the fallback, and use Chubu Centrair for the Ise-Shima leg, which is about three hours from the coast by road. Osaka works for a Kyoto-first routing.

Among our preferred hotel partners, Tokyo gives you Aman, Park Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental and Shangri-La, and Kyoto gives you Aman, Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton on the Kamo river. On the Ise-Shima coast, Amanemu above Ago Bay is the property this itinerary is built around, and its private hot spring rooms are worth booking before anything else.

Ask your advisor about private temple access before opening hours, a kaiseki counter booked twelve months out, and staying clear of Golden Week at the end of the month, which is the one week in April we will actively talk you out of.
